Year summary

Early hard court season and Australian Open

Federer began his tennis season with the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, a preseason exhibition tournament not affiliated with the ATP. The tournament, normally held in early January, was held from December 29 to December 31, 2011. Federer had a bye into the semifinals and played against Novak Djokovic, who defeated Gaël Monfils in the quarterfinals.[1] The highly anticipated match did not take long, however, as Djokovic flew past Federer to win the match with a 6–2, 6–1 tally.[2] Federer was then relegated to the third place match against Rafael Nadal. Nadal dominated the first set, and Federer made an attempt to claim the second set but failed, losing the match with a score of 1–6, 5–7.

Federer begins his ATP World Tour season at the Qatar Open, where he is defending his title. In his first World Tour game of the year, he thrashed Nikolay Davydenko with a score of 6–2, 6–2, in a rematch of last year's title match. He next faced qualifier Grega Žemlja and defeated him with ease, winning the match with a score of 6–2, 6–3. He will next play against eighth-seeded Andreas Seppi.
